Shift in AI Development Leadership

Historically, academia led in releasing significant machine learning models. Since 2014, the industry has taken the helm, producing 32 major models in 2022 alone, compared to just three from academia. This shift is largely due to the extensive resources—data, computational power, and financial investment—that industries possess.

Benchmark Saturation in AI
Although AI continues to achieve top results, the annual improvements on many benchmarks are becoming incrementally small. The pace at which these benchmarks are maxed out is accelerating, prompting the release of more advanced benchmarks like BIG-bench and HELM to challenge AI capabilities further.

Environmental Impact and Opportunities of AI
AI’s environmental footprint is significant; for instance, training the BLOOM model emitted 25 times the carbon of a flight from New York to San Francisco. However, advancements like the BCOOLER model demonstrate AI’s potential to optimize energy use and mitigate environmental impacts.

AI as a Pioneering Scientist
AI models are increasingly playing a crucial role in advancing scientific discovery, contributing to developments in hydrogen fusion, matrix manipulation efficiency, and new antibody creation in 2022.

Rising Misuse of AI Technologies
The misuse of AI is escalating, with a notable 26-fold increase in recorded incidents since 2012, such as deepfake manipulations and unethical surveillance practices. This trend underscores the expanding deployment and the heightened awareness of AI’s misuse potentials.

Growing Demand for AI Skills
AI-related job postings have risen across nearly all sectors in the U.S., signaling a robust demand for AI competencies in the workforce, excluding a few sectors like agriculture and forestry.

Dip in AI Investment
For the first time in a decade, private investment in AI saw a downturn in 2022, decreasing by 26.7% from the previous year. Despite this recent drop, the long-term trend shows a substantial increase in AI funding compared to a decade ago.

AI Adoption Among Companies
The rate of AI adoption by companies has stabilized between 50% and 60%. Companies that have embraced AI continue to report significant benefits, including cost reductions and revenue gains.

Increased Legislative Focus on AI
There is a growing legislative focus on AI, with a notable increase in AI-related laws—from one in 2016 to 37 in 2022—as governments worldwide begin to address the complexities associated with AI technologies.

Global Perceptions of AI
Public sentiment towards AI varies significantly worldwide. In 2022, 78% of Chinese participants viewed AI positively, the highest among surveyed countries, followed by Saudi Arabia and India. Conversely, only 35% of Americans felt similarly, indicating more skepticism about AI benefits in the U.S.
